Welcome to this extremely interesting book about size.

Marcel is a bird. He is big.

Steve is a worm, and he is . . . Wait a minute!

A hilariously quirky mini mystery reminiscent of Jon Klassen's classic I Want My Hat Back.

From bestselling, award-winning artist Kate Hindley, who won the Sainsbury's Children's Book Award and Oscar's Book Prize in 2021.

Ingenious, original and VERY funny, this picture book is full of surprises.

Reviews For Who Ate Steve?

"Ok, so this might be the funniest book we’ve read this year. We absolutely roared with laughter the first time we read it, and continue to do so every time we read!"

Mrs W Loves Reading

"What starts of as a story about size takes an unexpected and humorously dark turn when Marcel the bird eats Steve the worm. I think the reason it’s given my son such a giggle is that it reminds him of how adults might speak to him when he’s causing mischief!  It’s a real joy to read aloud.

Story Book Mama

"If I could hand out prizes to the books that I read, this would most definitely win the award for my favourite title of 2024. This a picture book that is crying out to be read. Very funny throughout, this is a book that littlies will absolutely love as they cheer for Steve as he tries to evade his fate. Full of charming details such as the worm’s hat and jaunty neckerchief, Kate Hindley’s fabulous illustrations bring Susannah Lloyd’s hilarious text brilliantly to life right up until the surprise ending, making this one of those stories that children will demand an immediate rereading of as well as returning to it over and over again.."

World's Smallest Library

"We have yet to meet a Susannah Lloyd book we didn’t love and we won’t be starting with Steve’s ill fated tale! Beginning like a lesson in size, the story soon descended into panto style shouts of “HE’S THERE!” from the Book Clubbers as Marcel the bird finds himself peckish and Steve the worm finds himself in a snack sized predicament! As the humour continues throughout, the Book Clubbers howled, chastised Marcel, warned Steve and quickly got to grips with a common garden food pyramid! We absolutely LOVED the ending and it never gets old, even on the 78th read through!!!

Stories For Little Ones

"This is probably the funniest book I’ve read in a long time. .Susannah Lloyd has really captured the comedy and horror of the situation. Kate Hindley’s illustrations are simply brilliant. Perfectly accompanying the text, the facial expressions are hilarious (particularly Marcel’s). And I just LOVE the ending. Sublime."

"This book has had my children laughing and laughing! The text is brilliantly engaging and perfect for reading aloud and creating dramatic pauses. There’s a twist in the tale too which will have everyone gasping!  Illustrations are packed with witty personality and the font and text layout works perfectly to help with theatrical voicing and creating lots of giggles."

"A delicious ending"

Shelf Editions

"A new interactive, laugh-out-loud book . Children will be shouting at the book as you turn each page and then shocked by the surprise ending. It's written beautifully, by @susannah_lloyd, with humorous language that is so easy to read, it will make even the straightest-laced reader into a comedian. And the illustrations by @hindleyillos complement the comedy and silliness perfectly. This is the perfect book for the end-of-the-day story at school and I guarantee your children will request it again and again.

The Thoughtful Spot

"Will have little ones hooked and eager to turn each page to see what happens next. This has been a favourite at bedtime recently. Share and enjoy for giggles."

The Mindful Bookshelf

"A fantastic read aloud, with a little dark humour, extremely clever and witty text along with really funny illustrations by Kate Hindley."

Mammy Gittins

"A hilarious tale that’s perfect for reading aloud, with giggles guaranteed from the very first page."

Lights Out With Louise

"This is a fabulous book!  A wonderfully tongue-in-cheek use of teacher-style phrases are used. The illustrations are just wonderful. The range of expressions their faces show are incredible, allowing the reader to seemingly beat the teacher in understanding/ predicting what is going on. The ending is just purrr-fect, leaving readers to either create their own sequel or decide whether they think Marcel got his just desserts! Brilliant fun!"
